Kristiana arched her chest out and stretched her arms back at an impressive angle. Her feet, snug in her ballet shoes, were pointed in a perfect way at the right spots on the glistening wooden floor. Kristiana didn’t have to look at the other girls to know that she was the best of them—the most flexible, the most disciplined, the most dedicated—the best dancer. Regardless, Kristiana couldn’t help but try to turn her head to get a good luck at one particular dancer: her instructor, Lilian Petrova.

Lilian, no longer in the pose, was looking over each dancer to make sure that they were stretched out accurately. When her eyes locked with Kristiana’s, Kristiana swore her heart stop. The intense look on that woman’s face—her dark brown eyes bright with intelligence and passion; it was beautiful.

In her young life, Kristiana had never bothered trying to obtain a love life. She was seventeen, and her focus had always been on either her academics or on ballet. But Lilian…there was something magical about Lilian. Kristiana felt more drawn to her every time she saw her—every time they spoke. Lilian was engaging and magnificent in ways that other people just weren’t, and try as she might, Kristiana couldn’t figure out the specific reasons for this.

Lilian swallowed thickly as she continued to stare back at Kristiana. Then, rather abruptly, she turned away and announced that rehearsals were over.

Kristiana slowly retracted her arms back and relaxed. Sweat coating her entire body, she remained standing where she was as she panted. The other girls walked to their bags—to their water bottles and cell phones. Kristiana didn’t pay them any mind, instead keeping her eyes glued to Lilian.

This may be one of many small studios in New York City, and Lilian Petrova may not be the most prestigious dancer of all time, but the way she taught—the way she danced and loved—it made Kristiana a better dancer; it had given her an unconventional edge that the proper dance academies wouldn’t have had. Lilian was never afraid to be daring rather than precise.

To the other girls, Kristiana was positive that ballet was nothing more than a hobby to them. To Kristiana, it was everything…and so was Lilian.

Kristiana lingered in the studio until all the other girls were gone. Lilian crossed her arms and pointedly glared at Kristiana.

“I’m sure your mom is waiting for you outside,” Lilian said.

Kristiana’s mom always texted her after rehearsals to let her know that she waiting in the parking lot. So Lilian was probably right, but Kristiana didn’t want to check her phone.

“She said she was going to be a little later today,” Kristiana said, taking slow steps toward her instructor. “Is that alright with you?”

Lilian smirked, shaking her head. “You’re a terrible liar.”

“Never needed to lie before.”

“That’s because you’re a good kid.”

“No,” Kristiana said, almost laughing at the assumption that many people seemed to have about her. “It’s because I could always get what I wanted with honesty. But you already knew that about me.
